5 Quick and Easy Ways to Decorate Your Door for Halloween

The air’s getting colder, the leaves are changing colour, and at the end of the month: Halloween. While the celebrations this year will likely be a bit different than years prior, there are still plenty of ways to have fun. One of the easiest ways to spread a little Halloween fun is by putting up some decorations, and there’s no better place than your front door. Here are five of our favourite quick, easy decorating tips to get your door – and your house – right into the spooky mood.

1. Turn Your Door Into a Jack O’ Lantern

One of the easiest ways to give your front door some festive spirit is to transform it into a jack o’ lantern! The best part about this DIY is that it works no matter what colour your door is, and requires only a few minutes to put together. Grab some craft paper in a colour that will contrast with your door (black or white usually works really well) and cut out the shapes of a jack o’ lantern’s eyes, nose, and mouth. Simply affix the cutouts to your door with a non-permanent adhesive of your choice, and enjoy the striking Halloween upgrade!

2. Hang a Skull Garland

If you’re a fan of all things macabre and scary, this garland is right up your alley. It’s also perfect for those who may not be naturally crafty. All you need to do is gather some plastic skulls and decide whether you’d like your garland to stretch across the top of your door or if you’d like to hang the skulls together in a batch in the center of your door. Once you know which configuration you’d like, drill holes in the plastic skulls where you can string some twine through. Tie them together and hang them across the door for a pleasantly morbid decoration.

3. Make Your Own Monster Door

This is the project to do if you have youngsters in the house who want to help decorate! Cover your front door with paper in a single colour, then invite your assistants to help create a monster with cutout eyes, horns, fangs, noses, and warts. In the end, you’ll have a door decoration that is completely unique to you and your family, and your horse will have a charmingly spooky entryway.

4. When in Doubt, Pumpkin It Out

Pumpkins are a classic fall decoration and for good reason. If you don’t want to attach anything to your door, and if you don’t have time to devote to crafty pursuits, simply frame your door with a few pumpkins on either side of the doorway. Your neighbours will think your house looks fresh from a fall magazine, and you’ll be able to enjoy the spirit of the season without investing a lot of time or effort.

5. Creepy Crawly Wreath

There’s a wreath for every season, and we love how creepy this one is. Get your hands on a plain twig wreath (readily available at most craft stores) and pick up a few bags of plastic bugs and snakes. Grab a hot glue gun, and cover the wreath with the creepy crawlies. When you hang it on your front door, you’ll have a decoration that looks right out of a campfire ghost story.

6. Bonus: Transform Your Garage Doors Into A Monster Mouth

Surprise! You didn’t think we’d forgotten your garage doors, did you? Your garage door is a massive canvas, and it’s easy to transform it into a mouth for your house. Grab a tarp (preferably black) that can stretch across your garage door. With some white paint, paint on some huge, pointy teeth across the top and bottom of the tarp. Attach the tarp to your garage door with your choice of non-permanent adhesive, and take a few steps back. Just like that, your house has been transformed into a haunted, hungry monster house.
