One Canadian company recently got to do just that, and it’s collaboration with a manufacturer and a residential architect versed in retail design offers valuable insights into how this complicated process can play out to a satisfactory conclusion.
The biggest takeaway, though, is relevant to any company, whether it’s designing a showroom or not: Develop strong business relationships, do your research, and know your local market inside and out.
The Background
Kempenfelt Windows & Doors first opened in Barrie, Ontario two decades ago. It’s currently the top dealer for Toronto’s Euro Vinyl Windows and Doors. Thee companies have been close partners ever since Kempenfelt owner Rob Maslen had an awkward first meeting in 1994 with Chris Meiorin, who owns Euro Vinyl Windows.
“Rob came in late,” says Laura Weil, the sales and marketing manager for Euro Vinyl Windows. “Chris had low expectations from the meeting and felt pressure to get hoe to a dinner for his wedding anniversary. However, Rob explained to Chris that he was going to be our largest dealer. This is a familiar time–it’s been sung before by many ambitious entrepreneurs. Difference was, this time it became a reality.”
