As the weather gradually begins to grow warmer and we begin to head outside again, you may be looking at getting some tasks completed around the house.
Winter can be tough on your home, so now is the time to give your home a once over to see if any repairs or upgrades are needed.
We’ve assembled some tips for getting your home ready for the upcoming warmer months.
Take A Look At Your Gutters
As mentioned, winter can be tough on the exterior of your home. As the warmer temperatures melt snow and ice, water can run down into gutters. Clogged gutters and downspouts can cause the wood trim to rot, leaving room for pests to get into your attic.
Cleaning your gutters can help prevent damage from heavy rain.
Check Sprinkler and Irrigation Systems
April is known as National Gardening Month, where all the avid gardeners are eager to get outside and work on their garden. Now is also the perfect time to check on your sprinklers and irrigation systems to make sure your garden and your grass gets the water it needs!
Here’s a few tips to check on your sprinkler and irrigation systems:
- Run the system through all your areas manually and then take a walk of your property
- Ensure that none of the sprinkler heads are damaged
- If all appears to be well, check to make sure the water won’t spray your windows or will hit the sidewalk.
- If you’re not sure how to maintain your sprinklers, call a professional to help save you time and money.
Inspect Your Driveway and Paths
Ice, snow and sidewalk salt can cause cracks in your driveway or your walkway. Take a walk around your property to look for any damaged walkways or the driveway and schedule repairs as needed.
How Does Your Roof Look?
Before you rush to get out your ladder, you don’t have to physically get up on your roof to do this.
Go outside and take a walk around your property. Take a look to see if there are any loose or missing shingles, pipes that are missing or anything that looks like it may require repairing. A damaged roof can give way to leaks or unwanted critters getting into your home, which is the last thing you want. If you have any concerns about the condition of your roof, call a licensed roofing professional.
Check Your Windows
And lastly, how are your windows looking? Warmer weather is the perfect time to clean your windows! It is recommended that windows should be cleaned one to two times a year. Clean the window screen and check for any holes. If there’s a hole bigger than a quarter, bugs will be able to get inside.
Check the seals around your windows, as the cold can cause cracks or harden the caulking.
In an earlier blog, we discussed some tips for how to know if you need new windows. The questions below will help you determine if you need new windows:
- Do your windows fog up easily?
- Are they difficult to close or open?
- Are they drafty?
- Do they refuse to stay open?
If you answered “yes” to any of those questions, you probably need new windows.
