Your home is your haven to unwind and relax.
At the end of a long day, it’s where you go to feel at peace. However, depending on where you live, your home may not reside in the quietest area. Loud traffic, noisy neighbours or nearby construction can disrupt plans for a relaxing evening.
However, there are things you can do to make your home less noisy. We’ve assembled some tips you can follow to reduce the amount of noise in your home.
Hang Up Some Soundproof Curtains
Soundproof curtains are a cost-effective and easy way to soundproof your home. There are many types of curtains that also block out light, which is beneficial for those who work night shifts or those who find it difficult to sleep at night due to bright lights. Soundproof curtains are an excellent way to block out bright lights and excessive noise when you’re just trying to get a good night’s sleep. Plus, adding some curtains to a space can give it depth and character!
Make Your Walls Soundproof
At first glance, you may think this sounds quite expensive. Or, if you happen to live in a condo or a townhome, making those changes may be ill-advised. However, there are ways you can make your walls soundproof without having to tear down and rebuild the walls:
- Add acoustic panels. Acoustic panels reduce the amount of sound that filters through the home, plus they can act as a design element. The panels can come in a variety of patterns and colours to help add some colour to a space, if you choose.
- Hang rugs or drapes. Rugs and drapes are beneficial in blocking out sound plus you can find multiple colours, patterns and fabrics.
Use Furniture to Your Advantage
Soft, plush furniture naturally blocks out sound. Decorating your home with upholstered furniture with suede or microfiber fabrics, placing them close to the source of outside noise, will help dampen the sound that makes it into your living space. Even something as simple as placing large bookcases up against the wall will block out some of the noise (and will showcase all your favourite reading material too, of course)!
Replace Your Windows
Often, a sure sign that you need to replace your windows is that you hear a lot of outside noise even when your windows are closed. If you seem to have little protection against what’s going on outside your home, your windows may not be sealed properly or they may have been improperly installed. Alternatively, replacing the caulking around the windows can be a temporary solution.
