Don’t you ever wonder how some commercial buildings manage to have such beautiful, crystal clear windows? Like anything, after investing in home improvements such as the installation of new vinyl windows, you’re going to want them looking clean and bright! After all, windows that look nice from the inside and outside of your home make a huge difference in the overall appearance of your property.
Vinyl windows are not only high in quality, they are also extremely easy to clean and maintain. If you’re after some quick homecare tips to keep your windows looking great, consider these suggestions:
•Avoid working in direct sunlight – If you are washing your windows under the sunlight, it can be very difficult to see what you’re doing, and because of this can lead to streaking. For best results, (and to avoid overheating!) wash your vinyl windows in the early morning or late afternoon.
•If you are using a squeegee, always check that it is free from dirt and/or stones. Forgetting to do so could result in scratches and streaks. For best results, purchase a squeegee of good quality, especially when dealing with sensitive glass.
•Wash one side of a window with horizontal strokes and the other side with vertical strokes so you can pinpoint which side of the window has the streaks (if visible).
•Vinyl windows can be cleaned with a simple home remedy solution. Refrain from using chemicals as this can discolour the windows and cause damage to the window’s surface.
•For the vinyl sash and Vinyl frames of your windows, you may use a mild dish soap and lukewarm water. Specialty vinyl cleaners will also work but generally there is no need to spend the extra money when you don’t have to. However, if you have a particularly stuborn stain then a vinyl cleaner that is specific to vinyl should be used instead. Be sure to test in an inconspicuous spot first to ensure there is no unwanted discolouration. When finished, simply rinse with clean water and wipe dry with a soft cloth.
•For a smooth streak-free finish, use a microfiber towel; these are gentle on the glass and wipe away water/solution with ease.
•If you’re purchasing a cleaning agent, your choice of product makes a difference. If you use strong detergent powder for cleaning purposes, the quality of glass may weaken. Make sure you use a mild detergent or liquid detergent for cleaning; it will clean you windows effectively without leaving residue. Finally, don’t use too much detergent. If there is too much solution on your windows it can cause the glass to become blurry.
•To ensure your safety, consider hiring a professional window cleaner for areas that are difficult to access. Hiring a professional window cleaner is usually inexpensive (approximately $75 – $200 per household) and it reduces the task list so you can get out and enjoy the things you truly love to do. Options for safety; hire a professional window cleaner that is WSIB certified to clean the outside windows, especially those on the upper levels, and simply clean the inside windows yourself. This not only ensures you are not having to struggle with ladders, but it will also reduce your costs.
