How to Prepare for a Window Installation

How to Prepare for a Window Installation

You’ve found the windows that are perfect for your home. They’re the size, shape, and colour that you want, and you’ve got them set aside and ordered. Congratulations! Are you ready for what comes next?

When homeowners are buying new windows, it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement and forget about the actual process of window installation. While an experienced professional contractor can make short work of the installation, there are some things that need to be done beforehand to ensure a smooth and hassle-free appointment.

Schedule Appropriately

The time you’ll need to set aside for your window installation will depend largely on how many windows you’re having replaced. A single window may take no more than an hour or two, but if you’re outfitting the whole house, you might need a whole day. Find out from your installer how long they expect the process to take, and then plan accordingly.

Do you need to make arrangements for pets to be out of the house or separated in another are of the home? Do you need to be present for the installation? Do you need to make plans for your driveway to be accessible for the installation vehicles and equipment?

Clean Inside & Outside

The next step is to clear a wide path to the installation areas, both inside and outside your home. This means moving aside furniture or lawn decor that impedes easy access. Move aside area rugs, as they could present a tripping hazard. If the contractor will need to set up a ladder or scaffolding equipment to reach the window, make sure that they have ample room to set it up.

Clear & Protect the Area

If you haven’t already, remove any window coverings such as drapes or blinds, disconnect any alarms and remove any paintings from the wall and surrounding area. Not only will this provide your window installation expert with room to work, but it will protect your property from any accidental damage during the installation process.

Now that the pathways are clear and the window is easily accessible, it’s time to protect and cover everything in the room where the installation will take place. Your contractor will bring drop sheets to catch any dust or debris in the area they’ll be working, but you should cover any furniture or items that you’d like to protect from dust or accidental damage with drop cloths or sheets of your own.

When the work is done your installation contractor should clean the installation area and remove any debris. The only thing left to do is move your belongings back into position, rehang your drapes or blinds, and enjoy the beauty of your brand-new windows!
